DESCRIPTION:Washington DC’s Teen Mortgage climbed from the city’s primordial punk soup in 2017 after guitarist/vocalist James Guile relocated to the nation’s capital from Liverpool\, UK and by a stroke of luck was quickly able to find hard hitting drummer Ed Barkauskas via a desperate craigslist post. As a two piece they stood out – crossbreeding east coast hardcore aggression and garage/surf sleaze with a focus on pop sensibility. This sonic blend perfectly set the scene for vocalist and guitarist James Guile to illustrate what he describes as “the absurdity of living in the era of late stage capitalism and tech feudalism”. He adds\, “it’s even woven into our name\, like Mortgage in latin means ‘death pledge’” \nTeen Mortgage’s acerbic intensity was noticed by Brooklyn\, NY label King Pizza Records\, who released the duo’s 2019 EP Life/Death and 2021’s Smoked. Songs from the EPs earned Teen Mortgage placements with Shameless\, Vans Park Series\, and Evil Bikes and support slots with notable bands like The Chats\, Mike Krol\, Bass Drum Of Death\, Jeff The Brotherhood\, etc. \nKnown for their rowdy live shows\, Teen Mortgage detonates a sonic bomb that leaves no room for apathy\, let alone time to breathe. Guile’s caustic riffs and sneer paired with Barakauskas’s brawn have fostered a new established meeting ground for those looking for a place to mosh. Their DIY headline national tours have seen crowd members become rabid as soon as the pair kick in the first riff of the set\, like a pack of coyotes chasing down their prey. From deindustrialised towns hollowed out by decades of neglect\, to the death toll in Gaza counted out in verse\, to a withering monologue delivered from inside the mind of a ruling-class villain. But Explicit Agitation is also their most complete record: alongside the politics sits love\, loneliness\, lost faith\, and a searching self-awareness about what protest art is actually for. Recorded with Chris Marshall at Castle of Doom Studios\, who produced their debut\, the album’s title signals intent. The music delivers on it. \nFronted by singer-songwriter Declan Welsh; the band now features a rotating cast of friends and musicians alongside longtime bassist Ben Corlett and they have built their reputation through ferocious live performances and writing that punches as hard as it moves. Their debut album Cheaply Bought\, Expensively Sold earned a Scottish Album of the Year shortlist; their second established them as an essential voice and live act. They’ve headlined the Barrowland Ballroom twice\, topped the bill at Tenement Trail\, and played the main stage at TRNSMT\, alongside appearances at Glastonbury\, Isle of Wight and Reeperbahn. The band are delighted to reschedule dates originally due to take place in spring 2025\, and their recent appearance at Scotland’s Resonate conference was proof\, if any were needed\, that the electric live show is very much intact. Their track “Hardly News” was featured in Universal’s 2025 film Drop. 16 million streams\, 4.5 million on “Absurd” alone\, BBC Radio 1 Intro Track of the Week\, New Music Friday playlisted in the UK\, a national advertising campaign with Tennent’s. Declan recently signed a publishing deal with Notting Hill Music\, with further announcements regarding the albums release imminent. \nThe return of one of the UK’s most essential live bands. Explicit Agitation is out September 2026. The tour starts 24th September.
