The Spooky Men’s Chorale. Men, singing songs, a vast, rumbling, black clad behemoth. A ruthless bunch of larrikins based in the Blue Mountains of Australia, fearless investigators of all things physical, metaphysical and cheese related. They’re returning to the UK to inspire your ear things with a collection of harmonies old and new.

Genial buffoonery and immaculate, testosterone drenched vocals define the Spooky Men’s Chorale. With a sound as warm and grainy as a slab of teak, they give equally loving attention to ancient Georgian table songs, terrifyingly beautiful ballads, highly inappropriate covers and immaculate man anthems such as Don’t Stand Between A Man And His Tools. They seek to comment on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male armed with only their voices, a sly collection of hats and facial hair and a twinkle in the eye. Their stage presence is imposing and foolishly statuesque, their studied deadpan no act, like most blokes they’ve only got the faintest clue about what’s going on.

In live performance they draw on a combination of musical and theatrical values which are elusive and multifarious the audience being invited to first joyously endure a wall of man sound, then laugh stupidly, then venture into areas of great tenderness. It is ideally not so much comedic but hilarious, not so much shimmeringly perfect as human in a very resonant way.

Since forming in 2001 the Spooky Men have played most of the major festivals including WOMAD (UK, NZ and Aus), Shrewsbury, Wickham (x7), Towersey (x7), Sidmouth (x8), Malmo, Tonder, Rudolstadt, Copenhagen, Berlin and Woodford (x6) and performed in excess of 800 gigs.

” A skilful mix of faultless vocal expertise and maverick abandon. Compelling, serious fun and totally irresistable” Froots

“When this singularly gifted choir circles and descends with eyes closed, in a manly way, it is longing and mellow and rumbles inside the heart” Reviewsbyjudith

“Do see them live, it makes such perfect sense. Or does it? Beautiful singing. Sharp, witty lyrics” Mark Radcliffe

“Grown up entertainment in the best, most infantile way. Don’t miss an opportunity to see them” Daily Telegraph

“Stand back and admire the beautifully sung anarchy” Glasgow Herald

“Their tuning, timing and dynamics are impeccable” The Independent
